Will the Tesla ever be a classic?

Tesla Motors is one of the youngest car companies in the world. This has not proved to be an obstacle in dominating the market for less than two decades. Everyone has heard about Tesla cars – mainly because of its founder, Elon Musk, who uses every opportunity to reach consumers

At this point it is worth recalling an event from a few years ago, when, as part of another of his ventures, he took one of the Tesla cars into space. In the end, a nagging question arises; does Tesla have the “something” in it to become a classic?

Elon Musk and Tesla Motors Inc.

Despite the fact that this American company was founded in 2003, we came to wait nine years for the first release. In 2012, the Tesla Model S hit the market and proved to be a worldwide hit. Tesla models were among the first widely available electric cars in the world; even today, when the automotive world is increasingly bold in proposing electrics, Tesla usually has no equal in terms of mileage range on a single charge. What’s more, the American company’s cars have always offered extremely advanced electronics; including an active collision prevention system and autopilot

Behind the huge success of the brand is, among others, a controversial South African businessman who, after the Tesla crisis in 2007, took over the open position of CEO, which he holds to this day. Elon Musk openly admitted what the strategy of the company from California was and is based on: we built a sports car, the revenue of which we used to build cheaper models. By creating a financial spiral in this way, Tesla is able to reduce the price of new generation models year after year; thus offering its vehicles to a wider clientele. Admittedly, Elon Musk knows business strategy like few others.

Tesla models

Tesla’s offer is expanding every year and designers’ imagination is less and less limited (see: model Cybertruck). Especially noteworthy is the second-generation Roadster, which doesn’t give an inch to models built by corporations that focus on sports machines

Undoubtedly, the observed increase in interest in electrics by both manufacturers and consumers will have a positive impact on Tesla’s sales results. Who knows, maybe in the near future, the sight of Tesla on the streets of Polish cities will stop surprising?

The offered range includes the following models

Verdict

It’s incredibly hard to predict the future, so in order to make a sensible judgement, there are a few important things to focus on first. First, it’s a fact that Tesla’s have been growing in popularity in recent years, so perhaps expect them, like the classics, to one day become commonplace vehicles. Second, the trend away from ownership to use may prove to be a definite obstacle; our society no longer believes that ownership is the most valuable form of use. The trend, which is gaining momentum, may mean that in a few decades there will be no search for Tesla models that have been forgotten by time

Such copies are extremely important in terms of classic status; limited numbers translate into uniqueness and value. Third, we do not know if the copies produced today will stand the test of time on the order of several decades. And finally, the technology industry is getting the consumer used to the idea that they don’t have the right to fix broken equipment themselves (see: Apple products). Unfortunately, a similar sentiment prevails among Tesla executives, leading to auto-repair of California-born cars becoming not only extremely complicated, but in many cases impossible

Taking into account the arguments mentioned above, it can be concluded that Tesla will certainly be a classic, however not in the present meaning of the word, and not on the scale we know
